Hi from Sarina, QLD

Hello All

My husband Bruce and I are about to become owners of 2 dexter's tomorrow, 1 is a heifer which is 18 month old, the other a bully calf 7 months. We are both new to cattle, so I have been reading plenty of info, any input/tips from other owners would very much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Mandy,

Welcome to the forum, you'll find a lot of very experienced Dexter owners willing to help.

How much land to you have, are you registering the animals?
:D

Hi Vicki

We are on 2 acres...but are considering moving onto larger acreage. I have only just heard of registering, but I am not sure as yet.

Hi Mandy
Nice to have you around. We are getting quite a collection of one or two animal owners around here! I have 3 - Kelly the Dratted Pest, Midnight the Darling Milk Cow and Barry the Barbeque; and that's really my limit, probably a bit over actually, unless I want to do a lot of supplementing over winter.
How are you getting on with your cows now? You must have had them a few weeks by the date on your initial post.
What's the purpose of your cows? Milk cow? (Woohoo!) barbeque meat? Grass mower? Breeding stock? (maybe not if you only have 2 acres (same as me)).
There sure is lots to learn isn't there? I've only been at this a year now and it sure was a steep and rocky road straight up!!!
What kind of tips are you after?
The biggies that I have learned are - don't be intimidated by my cows, I am ALPHA COW!!! Rotate your grazing area to help with resting, grass growth and pests. Feed minerals for health. Halter train early on. Cows love routine so start how you plan to finish. (Kelly still goes to the first place I fed her when she wants to be fed - I can't break her of that habit now!!!)
Look forward to hearing how things are going.
Best Wishes, Missy
